Contact Lens 101, Episode 1: How to Put In Your Lenses โœจ

CONTACT LENS 101 โ€ข EPISODE 1

New to contact lenses? Welcome to your lens era! ๐Ÿ‘€ Putting lenses in can feel a little daunting the first time, but it gets easy fast once you know the tricks. This quick tutorial walks you through it: how to tell if your lens is the right way round, and how to pop it in with a lens holder. No pressure, no rush. Just take it at your own pace.

Before you start

Wash your hands with soap and water, then dry them well with a lint-free towel. Clean, dry hands keep dirt and bacteria away from your eyes and stop the lens from sticking to your fingers. Have these ready too:

  • your lenses
  • soft-tip lens tweezers
  • a lens holder (applicator)
  • a mirror

Check your lens is the right way round

This is the step most beginners miss, and it's the difference between a comfy lens and a scratchy one.

Contact lens on a lens holder: correct way with edge curving inwards, incorrect way with edge pointing outwards

Using tweezers: Gently grip the edge of the lens from the bottom with your tweezers and look at its shape.

  • โœ… Correct: the edge curves inwards, like a little bowl.
  • โŒ Incorrect: the edge flares outwards, like a saucer. That means the lens is inside out. Flip it before you go any further.

Using a lens holder: Rest the lens on the holder and check again from the side.

  • โœ… Correct: the edge curves inwards into a neat cup shape.
  • โŒ Incorrect: the edge points outwards.

Put your lens in, in 3 steps

Three steps to put in a contact lens: place lens on holder, hold eye open and place lens on eye, gently blink
  1. Place the lens onto the lens holder. Sit it cup-side up, centred on the tip.
  2. Hold your eye open and place the lens onto your eye. Use your other hand to gently hold your eyelids open, look ahead, and bring the holder in until the lens touches your eye.
  3. Gently blink. A few soft blinks help the lens settle into place. You'll know it's in when your vision feels clear and comfortable.

Think you've got it? ๐Ÿ™Œ Repeat with the other eye, and you're done!

A few golden rules

  • Never rinse or store your lenses in tap water.
  • Don't sleep in your lenses unless they're specifically made for it.
  • Stick to your lens's wear schedule (daily, monthly and so on).
  • If you feel pain or redness, or your vision stays blurry, take the lens out and check in with an optometrist.
